For being over 100 years old, Saskatchewan has a number of ghost stories, legends and mysterious encounters. One of those mysterious encounters is the “St. Louis Ghost Train”. This story is a growing mystery and a larger phenomenon.
St. Louis is 130 km northeast from Saskatoon. St. Louis used to be a lively community until the whisper of dead decapitated train conductors rumoured through. It is said that the train conductor who passed through St. Louis quit often lost his head one night- literally. Its said that he had a few drinks as he was driving the train and died. There are also rumours that he ran his son over and the conductors ghost body still wanders the tracks (which have been removed) searching for his sons body with a lantern. No one can really put a finger on what happened all those years ago, but all we know is that at night you can still see the trains headlights with a little red underneath it. It will come and go, it will change its position and it will sit on the missing tracks for long periods of time but the obscure observation is that it will never arrive to anywhere outside of the known spots on the tracks.
A married couple decided to roll the dice and take the chances, they were going to investigate. With the light clearly visible, they drove straight at it on a rough old road running right beside the tracks. “We drove and drove and drove and we couldn’t see the lights anywhere. They disappeared! Then all of a sudden they reappeared, right behind us!” They husband said it “scared the hell out of me”. To this day, no one quite knows what the lights are doing here every night.
The ghost train phenomenon has been apart of St. Louis for as long as anyone in the community can remember. People believed when the train line was abandoned and removed, that the ghostly train phenomenon would end, but to this very day it still continues to ride in the dark night.
Whatever it is, its enduring sense of haunting lets folks play with their imagination and create theories as to why its still here. Its great publicity for such a small town, with all the tourists stopping by and awaiting to see the lights. This mystery will also have to await to be solved. I’m Billy Q here, and I bid my fairdue. Stay beautiful. This is Cougar News, keep reading or go solve the sudoku puzzle. I don’t care.
